A Message from the President

Hello to all.

I hope everyone is doing well and God is keeping you and your families safe. I will keep my greeting to a minimum, as I have a lot to report. First, I have to say that I am humbled by the help that the members are offering to get DMS back on track. This is not to say that we have all the help we need and we could use your help moving forward. I am putting myself out there for anyone who wants to help and does not know how, or has any questions. You can contact me personally at myfishdaddy3@aol.com .

DMS is now on Facebook, and I have to thank George and Marge Mood for their dedication to both the website and setting the Facebook account up. You can reach it by typing in "Delaware Mobile Surf-fishermen" in your search bar. Be careful what you type as there are "similar" Facebook accounts. It is very important to take DMS into the digital age for networking purposes and George and Marge have done a great job. Thanks, guys!!
In the OBX, there is a new battle over beach access.  The new proposed law that’s ready to go in effect February 15, 2012 suggests some of the key areas to be permanently closed or to have limited access. After 5 years of continued meetings, public forums, public comment periods & 2 years of being a member of the Negotiated Rule Making Committee,The North Carolina Beach Buggy Association has had enough.  They are ready to fight to regain access that was rightfully granted for recrational use.
The Cape Hatteras Access Preservation Alliance (CHAPA) filed a legal suit against the DOI, NPS, and CHNSRA asking the court to declare that the NPS acted improperly and illegally and to provide permanent injunctive relieve to prevent NPS from implementing the plan.  Take a moment and sign an on-line petition to the US Senate that urges the return of free and open access at CHNRSA.
Given what has happened at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreation Area, the awarding of a federal grant to Chincoteague Island NWR poses a great concern to all. A recent DelMarVa Now article reporting that the Chincoteague Island NWR will receive a $1.5 million federal grant to purchase land to be used as a parking lot is raising suspicions that it ultimately could keep vehicles from accessing the beach there. Additionally, the awarding of the grant has taken Chincoteague's Mayor and an Accomack County Supervisor by surprise.

DMS has our annual meeting with Senators, Representatives, State and Park officials in the month of March. There are many issues on the agenda and we look forward to seeing our legislators once again. One of the main concerns of DMS and many anglers is the proposed design of the layout at IRI, once the bridge is complete. DMS and the Delaware Fishing Alliance (DFA) is working together for the benefit of all the anglers to see that this is done correctly and have your voices heard. I look forward to working with the DFA in the future over fisheries and access issues.

Your DMS Officers and Directors are working harder than they ever have for you and could use your help. You do not have to head a committee, or even live in the area. If you think you are interested in helping, in any way, please contact me at anytime.

I hope to see you in the suds,
Floyd T Morton III (Morty)
DMS President
